Carlo & Monica - The Wedding

This past weekend I photographed a wedding unlike any I've photographed before. Carlo and Monica were married in Laredo, TX in a beautiful ceremony followed by an absolutely crazy reception. Their wedding date happened to coincide with the local Jamboozie festival (a Mardi Gras-like celebration) and as all the wedding festivities took place in the town square, the reception, festival, and parade were all sort of mushed together. The result was a lot of craziness and a lot of fun!

Bill & Amanda - The Wedding

I photographed this lovely couple's wedding this past weekend. I think it was the smallest (wedding-party-wise) wedding I've ever shot but Amanda and Bill definitely had everything that counted. Amanda's two daughters stood up with them during the ceremony and the whole evening was very family oriented. It was great to see how close they all are and to witness them coming together as a new family! Here are a few of my favorites from the day...

David and Jennifer

I've been really excited to photograph this couple. I had only ever met David over the phone until this past weekend, but he has such an open, funny personality I knew this session with him and Jennifer would be a lot of fun. And it was! Our location was actually the exact place they got engaged which was a first for me and I thought it was such an awesome idea. Here are some of my favorites from the evening.

I had the privilege this past weekend to photograph my first military wedding. It was really a beautiful experience and I was especially grateful to be able to make a small contribution in recording Sean and Theresa's wedding day memories. Sean is being deployed overseas in a little over a week, so it was that much more important to make sure I captured every detail from the day and especially all the loved ones who came to witness.

Just a little note to future grooms: I had never seen this until this weekend, but when you buy shoes for your wedding day, make sure you have not only two shoes, but a left shoe and a right shoe! Sean and his best man had a little excitement finding a pair of shoes he could walk down the aisle in right before the ceremony!

Hot Times At The Farm

I just got back from a visit with the boys and my mom to my grandparents' farm. I've posted photos of the farm before but this trip was really memorable for me because of the boys. Running around on the farm with my sister and cousins are some of my fondest memories as a kid growing up and I think it's really sad that most kids these days don't get the opportunity to have the experiences we did. We would spend hours upon hours outside exploring the fields and the farm buildings. We always looked forward to going to the farm so much!

Now, my oldest is now old enough to start to appreciate the freedom and the possibilities the farm presents. He and I did some exploring together and he seems to thoroughly enjoy himself there. For my youngest, this trip is the first one that he is able to walk and spend any real amount of time outside. He really seemed to like the fact that he could walk off wherever he wanted without someone constantly pulling him back or turning him around. Free reign is the best when you're a kid! It was hotter there than it is here, but we still went out every morning to do a little exploring and to look for the cattle.

Yes, I know, his pants are too small! I just grabbed a pair out of his drawer as we were packing and didn't realize until we arrived that he had almost grown out of them!

The farm is a great place to find animal tracks. Here are some deer tracks that we found.

I have been really looking forward to this session with these two. Gabe and Desiree are expecting their first baby in a few weeks. I knew they would show up looking fabulous and they did not disappoint. Gabe kept me laughing the whole time and Desiree is such a beautiful pregnant momma! Even though it was HOT, you would never be able to tell from the way they worked it. And look at all the sunshiny goodness! Congratulations you guys. I can't wait to meet the little one!

Some of you may remember this wonderful family from a couple years back when their first daughter was still a baby. Well, they have two little girls now and I had the pleasure of photographing them all again today. What beautiful little girls!

I just had to re-post this photo from two years ago for comparison.....how quickly they grow!!

As I've mentioned before, I went to college with this mom and dad and one of my main memories of Dad is of him playing the bongos around campus. Apparently, he is passing his musical ability, including his love of bongos, on to his daughter. It took the whole session to get her to acquiesce to this photo but I'm so glad we got it! Like father, like daughter!

Shane & Gena (The Wedding)

What an awesome weekend! The only thing I could have asked for would have been MORE TIME! California was beautiful and I would have loved an extra day to hang out on the beach...but on to the wedding....

We've known Shane for a long time - since our college days - and I think we can take a little bit of credit (along with my sister-in-law, Amanda) for getting Shane and Gena together. See, Jonathan and I moved to Rome along with Amanda pretty soon after we were married. It was something we really wanted to do before we settled down and started a family and had jobs we couldn't easily leave, so we did it (this is something I highly recommend doing by the way). Jonathan and Shane had played basketball together in college and Shane happened to be playing professionally for a team just outside Rome while we were living there. We went to some of his games and hung out when we could, and when we left, Amanda stayed and needed some new roommates. Eventually, Gena came along, and what was supposed to be a 6 week vacation turned into 2 years. She and Amanda became fast friends and when Amanda introduced her to Shane, well, the rest as they say, is history!

The wedding was fabulous. Beautiful and full of fun, silliness, and a little "Risky Business". I knew most of the groomsmen from college too, and of course they rocked, but I also got to meet so many of Gena's beautiful bridesmaids who were also totally AWESOME! (Can you tell I had a good time?!) Anyway, on to the photos! Here are some of my favorites from the day...

I am still not exactly sure how the following couple pictures happened. We had been talking a couple days earlier about doing a "Risky Business"-type photo with the groomsmen. The joke sort of kept going...and then this happened....

Now I know that as a professional photographer, I should pretty much try to show some of my best images on this blog. Unfortunately, you're getting a little less that stellar images in this post, but I just had to share them. We went to the MAVS championship parade this morning here in Dallas, and I took all of these photos with my camera lifted high in the air above my head trying to shoot over the people in front of me and still get some action (I also managed to get lots of trees). Even though they aren't the best, I am still super excited about them, so here they are...

The Jasons. Terry was so funny - he was just smiling away and filming the crowd on his iphone the whole time. It was pretty cool that he seemed as excited to see all of us as we were to see him.

This post is something I'm really excited about. My brother and sister-in-law are about to launch their new jewelry company this month and they asked me to help photograph their creations for their marketing and website. Workshop Bound!

A couple weekends ago I attended my first NASCAR race. I've been hired by PAC Systems to shoot a few events for them throughout the year and this was on the list. It was definitely a new experience for me since the most I really know about NASCAR has been limited to what I've seen on the news (and I have heard of Jeff Gordon). I guess it was sort of what I expected, but more. I felt sort of like I had walked into an eternal spring break where everyone has to have an RV. It was fun and different, and I thought I'd share a few shots from the evening.

How Does Your Garden Grow

I'm growing a garden. Some of you may know that we are spending our first spring in our first house, so this is my first chance ever to garden in anything apart from containers. I found this awesome blog to help get me started, but prepping for a garden in a place that hasn't had much care for a few years takes awhile. We've cut down and torn out most of what was in the yard (most of it overgrown random bushes), and tilled and amended the soil. By the time all that was done, it was a little late for cool-season vegetables, but I planted them anyway. They are coming up but none are ready yet, so we'll see how they do.

I started almost everything from seed. A few things, like tomatoes and peas, I started inside but the rest I sowed directly in the ground. I even drew out a plan to show where everything would go. I thought this was a great idea until one of my dogs (who is intent on letting anyone who walks by know that they are trespassing in her area) ran through my newly planted garden multiple times and mixed things up a bit. So I upgraded the fence I had from 1 foot to 2 feet which seems to be working to keep out the dogs, but now that things are growing, some of them are out of place and I don't recognize everything to know if it's a weed or if it's something I meant to grow. Hmm.

For example, is this eggplant? I sowed 6 plants but this is the only one that is where it's supposed to be. There are others like it in various places around the garden but I'd like to know that it actually is eggplant before I move it to the right place.

Is this broccoli? These things are all over the place and definitely not where they're supposed to be, but I'm pretty sure it is broccoli.

This is a small example of some of the stuff we've been removing. I think this is the last of it!

Asparagus (although I think I may not have planted it in the best spot - did you know it grows to 5 feet?)

Blackberries ( I am super excited about these)

Clematis (not food, but you know, I think it's pretty)

My little helper. He mostly likes to peel clementines so that he can put the peels in the compost pile.

Speaking of my little helper, I'm pretty sure one of us spilled some of the carrot seeds in the grass....

Roses, which were also already in the garden, and even though they aren't vegetables, will be staying because I'm afraid I'll kill it if I try to take it out.

Bye Bye, Butterflies

Our butterflies hatched yesterday. 4 of the 5 came out at almost the same time while we were outside in the yard, so I was keeping a close eye on the last one so that we could see at least one actually coming out of the chrysalis. However, during the 10 minute span of time that I was reading to William before his nap, the 5th one emerged. The picture below is of him, taken just after I found him. You can see his wings are still curled up a bit on the edges.

We let the butterflies spend the night inside and this morning we took them out to release them. William was really excited about holding them and we got a couple to crawl onto my hand and then onto his. I tried to get Louie interested too, but all he wanted to do was get to the dogs' water bowl so that he could play in it. Oh well!

Aly

Aly was my 2nd senior yesterday and also someone I've known for awhile - I photographed her mom and step-dad's wedding a couple years ago. She has grown up so much, too. And what beautiful green eyes! I always wanted green eyes when I was growing up.

Apparently, Aly doesn't wear dresses much, but look at her rockin' this one!

This last photo is an especially special one that I'd like to give a little background on. Aly got pregnant a couple years ago, which of course is a less than ideal situation to be in when you're in high school. As a serious athlete, a pregnancy also meant having to miss out on almost an entire year of basketball, which is something that has been very important in Aly's life. In spite of the difficulties and sacrifices it would bring, Aly made the courageous (and I'm sure very difficult) decision to have the baby and to place her for adoption. This photo that Aly is holding below is of her biological daughter, Alex, soon after she was born. Although Aly isn't raising Alex, she and her family have a good relationship with the adoptive family and are able to keep up with how Alex is doing and growing. It has been a very positive experience for everyone involved and I thought it was a story worth sharing.

Meet Erica. If you have been following my blog for a long time, you might remember her sister Eunice, who was one of my very first seniors ever (and who also came to help out with Erica!). It has probably been about that long since I've seen Erica, and has she grown up! It is easy taking photos when you've got a model like this - I've decided she looks like a cross between Pocahontas and Kim K. Even though it was HOT, we had a good time and she was a great sport letting me drag her all over the place to get the shots I wanted. Here are some of my favorites from our session...

Painted Ladies

We are "growing" butterflies. For Christmas, we gave the boys a butterfly growing kit from Insect Lore that is actually pretty cool. You get a butterly "house" and a voucher for caterpillars. Then when you're ready, you send in your voucher with $3 and get 5 caterpillars. We got ours a little over a week ago. They come in this little container with food and you basically just watch them eat and grow for a week or so. As you can see, we've had fun watching them grow and change.

Last night they all crawled up to the top of the container and are entering the pupal stage, making a little cocoon around themselves, and in a couple days we'll move them to their house and watch them emerge as butterflies.

Look Ma, No Tooth!

Months ago William fell on his face pretty hard. His front tooth turned grey but the dentist looked at it and said it was fine. Well, last week it started hurting. To the point where he was waking up crying. We went back to the dentist and of course, it was abscessed. So this morning we had it pulled. I was worried it would be traumatizing for him, but honestly I think it was harder for me to watch than for him to experience. It didn't seem to bother him at all and now he's really proud of his tooth-in-a-box and hole in his mouth.

Just as a side note, if any of you are looking for a pediatric dentist, I highly recommend Dr. Joseph Harris. We were referred to him by our dentist and I really like him. He reminds me of the dentist I had growing up.

New Logo

Some of you may have noticed I've had a new logo on my photos the past few weeks;

Even though it is so very simple, it actually is the result of weeks of work and correspondence with my awesome graphic designer (and client!), Shari Van Vranken of Em-press Design. I have to brag on her a bit here because this is the first time I've ever hired anyone to design anything for me and she made the experience a great one. She listened to all my vague ramblings about what I wanted and the sort of "feeling" I wanted to evoke, and gave me pages and pages of examples. This E was actually in one of the first designs she gave me, and I just kept coming back to it. After some tweaking, I think we got it perfect. What do you think?

Hector and Cecilia got married this past Saturday in a beautiful ceremony here in Dallas. Cecilia is the sister of one of my dear friends Maribel, so this was an especially special wedding for me to be a part of. It was a day full of laughter and fun. There is such an obvious tenderness and affection not only between Hector and Cecilia, but among their families as well. Definitely a great day.

The past few weeks have been full of family for us, many of whom we haven't seen in months. If you've been a follower of the blog before, you'll have seen most of the family below. Christopher and Calah have a new addition (and our godson) since we've last seen them, Liam Xavier Bede. We managed to snap some photos of them all before they returned home.

Ah, Christopher. I had to keep snapping and snapping to get this photo. He had bunny ears over Calah's head for about the first 20 or so shots but I finally managed to get one with no bunny ears and Christopher laughing gleefully to himself.

Saturday I photographed Taylor and Rachel's wedding here in Dallas. They could not have picked a better day! It was beautiful, perfect weather, and the Rangers won! (Too bad that trend didn't continue...) The ceremony and reception were held at the Filter Building on White Rock Lake. If you haven't been there, it's a pretty cool venue. Rachel went for a 1940s look with her hair and was absolutely stunning in her dress. Here are some of my faves from the day and thanks again to Delilah for being a great sidekick!

This poor little guy. Luke was not having the best day during this shoot - some combination of bad teething and swarms of mosquitoes - but would you ever know he felt bad from these photos? What a trooper he was! And looking at these photos just makes me want to pinch those cheeks!

Christmas Minis and Cards!!

OK, ok, I know it's barely October, but if you are hoping to get Christmas photos taken this year, it's time to start thinking about scheduling a session!

This year for the first time I'm offering "Christmas Minis" (mini portrait session) and Christmas cards. To help promote these new products, I'm running a special on cards (15% off until November 10th).

Next Saturday, October 16th, I will will be in downtown Dallas from 8am to 12pm shooting 30 minute "Christmas Minis" portrait sessions. These sessions, at $75, are a big discount from regular sessions (normally $300 for 1 to 1 1/2 hours of shooting), and include 15 digitally enhanced photos for you to choose from as well as your first 25 Christmas cards FREE. Below are examples of the Christmas card designs I'm offering this year. All wording can be customized to fit your preference.

Ethan (6 Months)

Yesterday I photographed little Ethan again for his 6 Month Session. It is amazing how fast babies change the first year! He already looks a lot older and is doing more cool stuff (like sitting up by himself). Along with sharing these photos of Ethan, I'd also like to make a request of you blog readers. Ethan was born with a weak heart and his parents recently found out that he is going to have a pacemaker put in very soon - as in sometime in the next few weeks. So, if you the praying kind, I know they would appreciate some prayers for a safe and uneventful procedure.

Jack & Angela - The Wedding

Angela and Jack got married this past weekend here in Dallas. They planned a full day, starting off with a Tea Ceremony at Jack's parents' house. His mom must have gotten up EARLY because she had cooked a LOT of yummy food for all the guests and family who were there. It was the first time I've photographed a Tea Ceremony and it was really cool to be a part of that kind of tradition. Just see how beautiful Angela looked!

Afterward, we headed back to the hotel for the ceremony, followed by some bed jumping, and a rockin reception.
